Elective Care Recovery Programme

We were commissioned by Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust to support elective care recovery from August 2023 to May 2024, and in this time we reduced the Trust’s waiting list by around 10,000 pathways and left a legacy of sustainable improvement. We were able to achieve this despite industrial action, winter pressures and a host of other challenges.

Our solution

  • Implemented an Elective Care Recovery Programme (ERCP) in August 2023, which quickly improved governance and oversight, introduced a suite of performance and improvement indicators, and led to an enhanced patient tracking process for the longest waiters.
  • Supported the development and implementation of extra first outpatient activity plans, along with an increased focus on validation.
  • Introduced a twice-weekly High Risk PTL process in December 2023, helping to stem and then reverse the growth in 78 week waiters.

Our impact

  • Governance now well-established and effective and PTL process for long-waiters and potential pathway issues embedded.
  • Trust stepping down to quarterly internal reporting.
  • Overall reduction of almost 10,000 (c16%) in the number of people waiting for treatment over the course of the year.
  • SASH ended the year with 19 people waiting over 78 weeks against a planned figure agreed by NHS England of 50 people, and 224 people waiting over 65 weeks.
